Youth Self-Harm Workshop

The Provincial Advisory Committee on Child Abuse (PACCA) was pleased to offer a free educational workshop intended to support service providers and their invited partners who work with youth.

The workshop, entitled "Youth Self-Harm" occur on October 15, 2009. The keynote presenter, Dr. Laurence Katz is from the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Department at the Health Sciences Centre. The afternoon consisted of a panel discussion on the topic of youth self-harm with representatives from Manitoba Justice, Manitoba Education, Citizenship and Youth, First Nations and Child Welfare.

This presentation provided an overview of the phenomenon of self-harm as well as information about the associated features. Treatment approaches were also reviewed. The afternoon panel discussion provided information on issues various service providers face in delivering services to this population.

A major focus of this workshop was to provide attendees with practical suggestions and strategies that may be used to assist youth displaying self-harm behaviour. A question and answer period was also included.
